We all have seen those videos of the oil spill under water and have tried to estimate the rate of flow just from the
video. KEEP IN MIND that we can't judge it by the cover. Although the oil appears to be gushing out at a fast rate of
speed, the oil flow toward the center of the spout that we can't see is coming out at a very high rate of speed. Think of
a rocket at lift-off. We see the thick white smoke shooting out from the nozzle but we don't see the hot flame at the
center which is shooting out at a rate faster than the speed of sound. Although that oil is not gushing out at the speed
of sound from high pressures, I wouldn't be surprise if that oil flow at the center of the spout is flowing out more then
10 time the speed of what we see on the outside of the flow from the videos that we see on tv. That oil appears to be
flowing at a high velocity on the outside. I hate to think of how fast it is really coming out. Until someone get down there
an measure the rate of flow we will never know accurately how fast that oil is coming out.
A good way to capture that oil is to catch it at the bottom at the broken pipe by designing an adapter that will go over
the top of the assembly and enclose it just under the joint ring with a device that looks like a camera iris creating a
near tight seal around the pipe joining the valve assembly. Have a new pipe at the top of the adaptor that leads to the
surface into a open barge type reservoir where the oil can then be capture with high speed oil pumps without spilling
into the sea. If the oil is seeping at a flow rate of 20,000 barrows a day then it should be siphoned at a higher rate to
maintain a negative flow at the iris seals below where oil would not seep out but water pressure would seep in, the way
a chimney creates a draft that sucks the smoke out of a fireplace with a hot flame going. By pumping the oil out at a
faster rate then the oil leak itself just a few feet below the surrounding sea level at the floating reservoir will maintain a
constant low pressure allowing the oil to rise faster. Being that oil and gas is a lot lighter than water, with the proper
design, the continuous updraft of the oil and gas flow and high sea pressure way below pushing against the adapter
will create a negative flow down at the adapter's iris to prevent any leakage of oil at the iris seals. 100% of the oil
would be contained.
